Flip! and Buccaneer Bones

On Saturday, my daughters and I had a chance to play some games.  We wanted to keep it light and quick, so we tried out a couple of new ones…

Flip! is a rummy-like game with a twist.  The cards are double-sided!  I think the rules could be tweaked a bit in regards to discards and number of cards in the hand, but I think it has a lot of potential, especially in larger numbers than the 3 we had.  When laying sets or runs, you can make use of any of the card sides that are visible to you at that time..  This gives a bit of strategy as you try to empty your hand, making use of your opponents’ hands WITHOUT emptying them..  And, if you ever discard a ‘flip’ card, everyone flips their hands to use the other sides..  It was a bit much for Brynna, but she did OK.  Abby, on the other hand, definitely wants to play it again.  We’ll have to get Jenn involved…  Or maybe take it to a family get-together…

Buccaneer Bones is a quick and fun little dice game with EXCELLENT components.  It’s got a very ‘yahtzee-ish’ mechanic in that you’re trying to get 2- and 3-of-a-kinds in order to move your ‘ships’ to an island to seek the treasure.  3 different island types allow you extra abilities like re-rolls, extra dice, and moving a dice +/- one number.  First to 3 treasures wins.  There’s also an interesting little combative mechanic if you find yourself with no usable moves, but we never actually hit that.  Our very first game ended in a tie, so the tiebreaker was determined by number of ships out of port.  Overall, definitely a quick and easy little filler that I can see us playing every so often.  Easy to set up, easy to play, and definitely enjoyable.

Oddly, though there haven’t been many updates lately, our family HAS been gaming a lot..  It’s just been on ONE game..  COCONUTS by Mayday Games!  I really need to write a full review of it, soon, because it’s been played so often lately that we’re not even putting it away anymore.  🙂  Hopefully, I’ll get a chance in the next few days to write more than just basic thoughts…

Let me know your thoughts!
